PE148 / HW143 -- Divemaster (professional)
This three-credit, spring-semester course provides classroom, pool, and open-water training for certification as a PADI Divemaster. The Divemaster certification is a professional rating and requires all the knowledge and diving skills of an instructor. Insured divemasters are qualified to assist an instructor in the training and supervision of diving students and to independently supervise and lead certified divers. The prerequisite for PE148/HW143 is PE147/HW142 or equivalent.
Classroom training includes lectures, and a multi-part final examination. It covers physics, physiology, dive practices, equipment, dive planning, divemaster leadership role, diver supervision, and assisting in instruction. This training provides all the academic knowledge required of an instructor.
Pool training includes evaluations of numerous fitness, watermanship, scuba diving, and rescue skills. It also includes training in supervising divers and assisting an instructor.
Two options exist for open-water training: internship and role-playing. The internship option includes assisting an instructor for ten open-water training sessions. The role-playing option includes three open-water sessions: mapping a dive site, role playing a dive leader, and role playing an assistant for entry-level training.
Each student must provide full open-water gear as required for PE146/HW141 . In addition, each student must provide a slate and compass. A logbook is required for certification. The course requires the PADI Divemaster manual, Encyclopedia of Diving, and divemaster slates.
Open-water training for Pace University credit usually is done locally. However, under exceptional circumstances, it could be done in the Caribbean during the summer. (See the travel portions of this web site.)
